Customize the Web Form
This guide will show you how to customize the look and behavior of your Basis Theory Elements.

This guide presumes you have completed either the Collect Data from Web or Collect Data with React guide.
In this guide, we are going to make our text element input accept a formatted phone number, remove special characters before tokenizing the value, and style our input. We also want to set focus on our text element when the control loads to prompt our users to input a value and enable the submit button when the form is complete.
Adding Input Mask to the Form
The first step is we want to provide an input mask to our form. This will ensure that a phone number is properly formatted and complete. The Text Element component support an input mask
property to be able to control the user input.

This will add an input mask to our form that matches the phone number pattern (XXX) XXX-XXXX

Transform Input before Tokenizing
With our mask, we can type in a phone number of (555) 123-4567
, however, we want to ultimately tokenize the value as 5551234567
we can control formatting later for display purposes or forwarning to a third-party.
The Text Element component also supports a transform
property, which will modify the input value prior to tokenizing it. We can update our previous example to the following:

When we make a call to tokenize the value of the Text Element, the input will be intercepted on the client side and run the transform
regular expression. The resulting value in this scenario will have the (

, -
, and space characters stripped out prior to submitting to Basis Theory.
Styling the Text Element
Being able to customize the styles of the various Elements components is important to have them match the look and feel of our existing website design. All of the Elements components support a style
property to customize most CSS properties on the input.
First, let's add some new styles for this application. We are going to create a dark theme by adding the following styles:

Handle Input Events
Finally, we want to be able to set focus to our Text Element input when the form loads and block clicking the submit button until the phone number input is complete. Basis Theory offers several events and methods to assist with these types of operations.
